LA LUNE ON DUNE - CARLIA KNOWLES
“ ‘LA LUNE ON DUNE’ felt like the natural title of this image taken during a collaborative photoshoot that I directed alongside four creatives calling Australia home and two French natives who were exploring it. ‘La Lune’ in French directly translates to ‘the moon’ and this element acted as a key motif in the photoshoot that focused on showcasing Australian-owned brands using a Western Australian treasure as the backdrop.
I predominantly photograph the built environment in reflection of my degree in Interior Design, however, from a young age pictured myself traveling the globe shooting high-end editorial campaigns for various fashion houses. ‘LA LUNE ON DUNE’ was an ode to that dream whilst also highlighting the raw beauty of Lancelin’s iconic sand dunes and the fact that they have been devastated by lime sand mining within the last few years.
Despite the huge community pushback on an environmental level, the mining will equally have a detrimental impact on a town greatly supported by the business generated from the 200,000 people who visit each year. Almost exactly two years ago I used the unique landscape as a backdrop for a photoshoot and going back this year was saddening. Please show your support to a community in need.”
