This image was captured from a rooftop overlooking a residential area of Xi’an, China. The early morning air was thick and humid. The sun attempted to penetrate the fog of pollution that covered the city. Dense urban developments blocked the horizon in every direction. The rooftop was exposed but also dwarfed by skyscrapers in the business district. I chose to turn away from this modernity and instead focus on the nature that was carving out space for itself between the crumbling residential buildings.
