The Geelong Library - EMMA CROSS

Captured on Djillong - Wadawurrung Country

1 Treasury Place, is a favourite Melbourne building of mine, designed by Yuncken Freeman Architects in the 1960s.

Finished in late 2015, the Geelong Library, designed by ARM Architecture, is a striking addition to the Arts and Government precinct in Geelong. ARM states the shape reflects the domes of great reading rooms such as in the State Library of Victoria, whilst the eroded sphere also conjures a future that is innovative and high tech.

This building reflects the transformation of Geelong from a manufacturing and industrial port city to a hub for education with striking architecture, perhaps aiming for the Guggenheim Bilbao Effect.

This photograph was taken to promote the building, in the week before the official opening, and prior to the construction being completed. With all the internal lights on, probably for the first time, my impression was of a glowing brain - a centre for knowledge, information, and a beacon to all those who saw it.
