Untitled 2 - New York - Lucas allen

“My eye is always drawn to colour clashes and the multitude of abstract compositions perceived within our hectic, visual world.

Torn billboards are a motif I’ve constantly gone back to over the last 30 plus years. Their inherent banality and shallowness often give way to stories on many levels: the history of that part of a city, the people involved in its production etc. They also scratch the itch I have of exploring abstracted colour forms and the serendipity of visual destruction.

Through the use of many layered processes in this work, I am striving to distill an original image from pure colour, composition and texture. The idea is to further obscure the source material, while posing the question, “what now constitutes a photograph, can we indeed know what we see?”
