CLOSE AND FAR - RYAN LINNEGAR

“During a trip to Uluru earlier in the year (my first) to shoot a luxury resort, some downtime presented an opportunity to explore the base of the rock.

I was struck by how Uluru first revealed itself on a large scale in the context of the landscape, then as I got closer a different world opened up within the shale-like surface viewed up close. There was a presence and stillness in this proximity. I became aware of how little I really knew, appreciated or understood of the spiritual connection of this place to the Anangu people.

I saw an abstracted composition of the detail of the surface of Uluru with shadows and texture. I was so close to this vast, almost breathing, monolithic entity but in that moment, I was conscious of still being very much an outsider, with only the slightest approximation of the feeling and weight of spiritual connection and knowledge that the local indigenous people have had for thousands of years.

Seeing in full view, but not really knowing.”
